There are lots of books on this subject! But, having been an employee for both good and bad supervisors, I can offer some ideas. It is important for you to set up procedures that help the employee do their job well. Be sure to communicate your expectations (hours, phone calls, text messaging, vacation, etc.) so that the person you hired has a clear idea of their job. Then, treat them like adults and expect that they will do these things. That means, if something in the performance of their responsibilities does not seem right, do some research to find where the discrepancy is. It could be anything besides the first thought that the person is trying to be lazy, avoid work...including lack of information, knowledge or materials. If you can look at these things and help the person overcome them and do the job well, you will not only garner their admiration, but your turnover will be low!
