Is staphylococcus aureus positive for gelatin?

Yes it is. This test can be used to differentiate between S. aureus (which is positive) and S. epidermidis (which is negative).

Can Staph be cured?

depends, some strains of the bacteria contain a unique gene that allows them to break down a large number of the antibiotics we would normally used to treat that type of infection, these strains are called methicillin resistant staph aureus (MRSA) and they most certainly are a super bug other strains do not have this gene and are called methicillin sensitive staph auresus (MSSA) and these are no worse than any other bacteria the problem being that hospitals are seeing more and more MRSA and less and less MSSA, it is the bacterial species evolving in front of our eyes in response to the continued use of antibiotics against them

Is it necessary to follow up Gram staining with KOH test?

Gram staining allows you to visualize bacteria and cells. I would only follow a Gram stain with a KOH test if I didn't find anything pathogenic or interesting to look at on the Gram stained slide. The KOH test breaks down large structures (usually hairs) that may be holding or blocking the visualization of pathogenic organisms. It is very useful on skin scrapings to look for ringworm, but otherwise it's not that useful clinically.

Differentiate the microscopic morphology of staphylococci and streptococci as seen by gram stain?

The main test to distinguish strep spp. from staph spp. is the catalase test. Staph spp. are catalase + whereas strep spp. are catalase -. ANSWER There are numerous test that are used to differentiate streptococci from Staphylococci. Just to name a few: Although they are both Gram Positive, their morphology (structures) are obviously different. Under a microscope strep usually looks like a chain of cocci while staph looks like a cluster of grapes formation. Lab test will show obvious differences in their hemolytic activity. For example, test will show the presence of leukocidin and staphylokinase (substances that are specific to staph bacteria). Test will also show suscetability of staph bacteria to the antimicrobial agent Novobiocin. Test will aslo show staph reaction to carbohydrate mannitol. There are many other test that will differentiate the two bacteria, this was just to name a few.

Does micrococcus luteus grow on msa plates?

Yes micrococcus luteus, along with micrococcus roseus both grow on MSA. But, they do not fermente on this agar giving a negative test. However, Staphylococcus aureus grows on MSA and fermentes giving a positive test. *Side note* MSA plate is used to test for G+ coccus. The plate contains salt and salt "loving" bacteria will grow and show yellow colony, example of S. aureus.

What are the general characteristics of staphylococcus Aureus?

Gram + coccus. Positive methanol test. Yellow on agar.
