The 2004 Ford Escape came equipped in a 2.0L L4 and 3.0 V6. The OEM Ford Motorcraft oil filter for the 2.0 is FL400S and FL820S for the V6. The first step in changing the oil is putting the vehicle safely on a lift or jack stands (not jacks). Second, remove the oil drain plug to let the older lubricant drain out. Third, the old oil filter can be hand screwed out and replaced. The drain plug and hold can be wiped clean of grease/debris then its threads lubricated and reinstalled. Replace the motor oil with fresh fluid until the top of fill mark is reached. Start the engine for a few moments, shut off, and recheck level and look for any evidence of leaks.
