According to USA Today the average stress level was 5.2 on a 10 point scale in 2011. This survey was taken by the American Psychological Association. Stress levels vary according to the individual and the situation. What may affect one person doesn't necessarily affect another and stress can be hidden among other factors. We can "adapt" to stress without even realizing it. Stress occurs when we perceive that certain demands are placed on us. We can learn coping skills as well as introducing stress relieving habits in our daily routine.
The point at which stress goes on increasing without much load is called the critical load.
The best communication strategies are to try and empathise with them and make them feel that you understand their situation and point. With difficult people, it is often the case that they do not feel understood. Even if this doesn't work, at least you will know that you have tried to see their perspective.
Try to remain calm and see things from the customers point of view. If reasoning and talking with them doesn't help the situation get a supervisor and allow them to take care of the problem.
