It is normal to not have very irregular periods when you are first starting menstruation.

One of the marvelous and frustrating parts of being female, is the mystery behind it all! It may be a couple years before your periods become really regular. As long as you are not sexually active, don't worry at all if your periods come regularly for a couple months and then skip a month. It takes very little to throw off a menstrual cycle.

Studies have now confirmed what many women have said for years, the average 28 day cycle, is not average. actually only 15% of all women have 28 day cycles! Teenagers "normally " have much longer cycles, closer to 45 days. After you reach the ripe old age of 25 to 35 your cycle will become more "regular" and will normally last 25 to 35 days.

The clear - thin, or sticky - thick to milky - white discharge are all normal. It is part of the cycle that tells you things are working, even if they aren't working on time! The discharge changes throughout the cycle depending on if it is before, during or after you have ovulated. When your period starts it means you are not pregnant and the cycle begins all over again. As long as you are not sexually active - you don't need a period to tell you you are not pregnant. So late or not, no stress. It's all normal!

When you know it is about time, or you feel like you are going to start, it's OK to use a pad or a mini-pad, that way when you start in the middle of class or out somewhere you can't possibly go take care of the situation, you have your panties covered.

Once you become more regular, don't be surprised if you come down with a flu bug, start a new exercise routine or even just stressing about exams, throws your cycle off.

Some (but not most) women have heavy, very irregular periods, bleeding in-between periods and bad cramping, others who participate in sports, that find irregular or painful periods a hassle they don't want. Your doctor can put you on a pill that will make your periods regular and light, if you find this to be the case.

Cramps : A warm bath or heating pad can go a long way, ibuprofen or Motrin will help also. If you try these and it isn't enough, see your doctor for help. (don't be embarrassed about anything you have to say to her or him, they have heard it all!!)

Most women suffer from PMS at some time in our life. Usually it starts a week or so before our period comes, feeling stressed, distracted, cranky, bowel changes, headaches, tender breasts, backaches, fatigue, tummy bloat, food craving, acne, feeling sad and or crying over everything.

Doctors don't know why some women get all the symptoms and some get none; it is probably hormones and there are a lot of things you can do to help.

If you have always wanted to learn yoga and meditation; now is the time!

Exercise, which sounds like the last thing you want to do when feeling PMSSy - but it actually is the best thing you can do. Just taking a fast walk, is great. It increases the natural, calming hormones in your system, along with plenty of rest and eating well - will reduce or eliminate most symptoms. Eat fruits and veggies, cut processed and fast foods, reduce salt, (cuts the puffy feeling) reduce or eliminate caffeine and increase water. Some vitamins : Vitamin B and E, calcium and magnesium (a good multi-vitamin with minerals has all of this).

Cravings : Some cravings are bad and some are good. Don't fight them all, moderation is the key. If you are absolutely dying for some chips; try unsalted or lightly salted tortilla's with salsa. Say yes to chocolate! (as long as you are not diabetic or allergic) There are health benefits to eating chocolate, try a candy bar that can be broken into little pieces. So you can eat it slowly throughout the day.
