It coats the filter media and is added through the skimmer. I have never had this type of filter myself so it may pay to get instructions from the manufacturer of the filter or from your pool shop. A: In addition to the above: You have to backwash the filter first. Determine the sq. footage of the filter - - - 24, 36, 48, 60 sq. ft. - - - divide the sq. ft. by 5 ( 48 divided by 5 = about 10 one pound coffee cans of the D E will then be added to the skimmer at a slow rate. Note: you are not adding 10 pounds of D E. The can is only used for quantity not weight). 24 div by 5= 5. The D E should be added to the skimmer, while the pump is running, shortly after you back wash the filter ~ do not wait 30 min, an hour, two hrs. - - - add as soon as possible. The skimmer is the square type opening at the edge of the pool at the water line. You will see the water flowing into it while the pump is running. If you have a lid over the skimmer opening use that access to add the D E. If not you have to figure out a way to get the D E into the throat of the skimmer from pool side without dumping a large quantity of the D E into the pool. k
