I've got a Renault scenic 1.6 and it makes a high pitched screaming noise when i change down from 4th gear into 5th gear also it locked up once when i was reversing?

same issue the screaming is a worn bearing within the gearbox probably the differential as these are prone to failure as for lock up this happens on manual transmittion a when the interlock system fails meaning 2 gears try to engage at once can blow gearbox to pieces if it occurs at high speed I.e in fifth gear doing 40+ mph so it's either replace gearbox or have a specialist repair the bearings etc which can be expensive remember that clutch should also be replaced at same time if there's signs of damage
