These transmission are rear wheel drive 4 speed automatics, that are all computer controlled. Common reasons for the overdrive light flashing are the external sensors on the vehicle like the throttle position sensor or vehicle speed sensor quite often go bad, causing these symptoms. Always run a scanner first to see if a sensor is causing your problem.
speed sensor is located at top of rear differential
no you don't have to drive with overdrive on permanently, but you will change gear quicker and less smoothly, also your fuel consumption will increase by as much as 50%.
four wheel drive low ========================================================= I know that on my Ford EXPLORER the automatic transmission shifts into overdrive around ( 50 miles per hour / 80 kilometers per hour )
The transmission temperature sensor is part of the overdrive solenoid, inside the transmission, on the valve body.
Exhaust manifold.
Overdrive is the normally allowed position ( it won't shift into overdrive until the speed is fast enough )
Overdrive is the normally allowed position
Have 1996 ranger4wd front abs sensor frozen on spindle any suggestions
overdrive allows the engine to run at lower RPM's , which increases the fuel economy and also the transmission runs cooler
If it has overdrive use it! it is a "highway gear" it will make no difference what so ever until you get up to speed then it will shift into overdrive and save you gas!
