If it's a Daisy Red Ryder then they have been in production since 1939 up to today. Look at the model number on the barrel. It will say something like no-111 model 40 or 1938B. Daisy started making the Red Ryder in 1939. It was the No:111 model 40. It has gone through several variations and today it the model 1938.

The Red Ryder BB Rifle has been in production from 1972 to today before that it was the model 111 or model 155. In fact there were many versions of the same model. there are 11 versions of the Red Ryder itself. The best way to tell an original 1938 Red Ryder is look for these items wood stock, logo on left side. Narrow bands. Saddle ring does not go all the way through the side of the receiver. Blue paint finish. Screws are slotted. This first one was made between 1972 and 78. A daisy BB rifle actually made in 1938 would be a Number.101 model 36 or a Number. 102 model 36 made between 1936 and 42. Another was to tell the older Daisy's is the lever action is aluminum not plastic. an original Red Ryder ( First version ) in fair to good condition is worth around $75. A current Red Ryder in Good condition is worth around $25.
The Actual Red Ryder name was used on the "No 111 model 40" made in 1940. In 1972 the name was changed to the model 1938. This is the one you see in stores today. There are several variations of the lever action BB rifle. in 1933-37 there was the "Buzz Barton" (it looks similar to the model 40). there are even older versions of the rifle going back to the lever action model B 1000 shot made in 1910.
