Calico is a co-dominant trait, meaning that half of your black and half of your red genes are shown.

------------- If both of the kittens are female, then it's likely that you have tortishells there! Tortishell pattern is gender-based genetic. It also happens with hamsters (If you breed a male golden (Syrian) hamster with any differant breed/colour of female, the female babys will all be tortishell! (I know because I had a teddy-bear golden! Gorgeous XD)

What is the birth rate of Calicos Is there usually only one per litter?

Calicos are just ordinary cats with a certain color mix. If you mean the number of kittens born to a calico mother, it's usually 3-5 per litter, the same as for any other cat. If you mean the number of kittens in a litter who are calico, it all depends on chance and the parents. It takes these 3 genes to make a calico: --An orange pigment gene from one parent. --A black pigment gene from the other parent (normal males only get their pigment from the mother, so they can't be calicos). --A gene to make white patches and separate the black & orange into their own large areas. So the parents need the right genetic mix. If both parents are missing the black, the orange, or the white patches, they can't have calico kittens. If all 3 genes are available, then luck of the draw decides how many kittens actually do get the full calico combination. It could be all or none of them. Is it true that only Siamese cats can bear calico kittens and please explain why or why not?

no that is not true calico kittens can be born to just about any breed of cat. I myself have two calicoes, their mother was a black/orange tortie and the father a orange longhair tabby. also in the litter was a two black and white males and an orange tabby male.

Are tri colored and calico cats the same thing?

Yes and no. Some tri-colored cats aren't calico but all calicos are tri-colored cats. To be considered a calico cat, a cat must be tri-colored, with areas of white, orange, and black hair.

What is a calico cat color?

Usually it will be black or orange, or black or orange with white. It will almost never be calico or a mixture of black and orange.

Why are there more female calicos than male calicos?

It has to with the X and Y chromosomes. The calico (orange, black, and white) and tortoiseshell (black and orange) male cats can be this way only if they are born with 2 X chromosomes and one Y chromosome (XXY), one of which X is inactive. Though very rare these males are usually sterile and therefore would not reproduce another.

What makes a cat calico?

Not necessarily. A calico cat is only female, due to genetics, while all tabby cats are males. A calico is typically white with orange and black patches in its pelt. Well that is not quite true. Most tabby cats are male and most calicos and tortoiseshells are females, but not all of them. They are very rare, but they do exist. Also, calicos of any gender must be orange, white, and black, or ginger, cream, and gray, in distinct patches.

What color is a calico cats father?

Usually it will be black or orange, or black or orange with white. It will almost never be calico or a mixture of black and orange.

What is a dilute calico cat?

Separate solid blocks of color, which must include red (orange), black, and white. They also may have blocks of tabby pattern, which produces an extremely colorful and beautiful cat. Dilute calicos, have the same separate blocks of color, only the colors are "diluted," i.e. "faded" shades of the original, which gives them an ethereal appearance. A dilute calico will have pale orange or buff for the red, and gray (or "blue") for the black.

What mix of colours do calico cats have?

Orange white and black

What color will the kittens be if the female is a calico and the male is cream?

well a cat can have any color kitten. my cat was gray and had kittens that were black, white and black and white kittens so it just really depends.

Can a orange and white cat be a calico cat?

No. Calico is often large areas of white with two other colours, usually orange and black. The Calico colouring can be found in many different breeds of cat. If a cat is just orange and white, it is not a calico. The coat colour is likely a Red (orange) Tabby and White.

How small are calico kittens?

The name calico refers to the cats being tri coloured white, brown, caramel or black and not the actual breed of cat. I have fosterd several calico females over the years and sizes depend on what breeding linage her parents come from . I dont think male cats are calico its usual for kittens to be female. So are torties they are female allso
