It's mounted up under the dash and when you push the brake pedal a spring loaded plastic rod extends, making the connection inside the switch to light the brake lights. This is a pretty common wear item.....and fairly inexpensive.

The brake light switch is stuck or out of adjustment. If it is a mechanical switch it is located somewhere on the brake pedal swing arm. If it is a pressure switch it is located near the Master Cylinder.
