I read a book about a mouse's diet and it said that a mouse is not supposed to have lettuce. Why?

It is a good source of vitamins A,C,calcium & posphorus it is also rich in the antioxidant lutein.
It is hard for humans to digest lettuce even and our digestive acid is really strong, so I can imagine its hard for them to digest it and that's why they can't have it.

It is primarily iceberg lettuce which no animal should be fed, due to it being primarily composed of water and therefore usually ends with the creature having diarrhea and in some animals this can be fatal.
It gives mice gas. Mice arent able to pass gas.
Another take:Most animals (Excluding the domesticated dog in its various itterations) know what is good for them and wont naturally eat or drink anything they cant digest unless it is likely to help them in some way to combat an existing ailment. (E.G a cat will eat grass to make itself sick if it has eaten too much or something that disagreed with it)If you have ever tried to grow lettuce you will know that field mice will eat it, but perhaps only if there is little to no other food source available. Different supspecies of mice, of course have completely different behavioral patterns and dietary requirements.
On the other hand, I don't eat lettuce so I wouldn't ask my mouse to, assuming I had one!
