That could depend on several things: why you signed over your rights, why you were going to allow him to be adopted, the state in which you live, etc. You may still have a good chance to have your son back in your life again, but you will need to hire an attorney and take it to court.

But before you do, please, ask yourself why you have had a change of heart. Do you really want him back in your life for good? Are you really up to, and ready for, the challenges and responsibilities of being a father? Have you regretted signing over your rights all along, or at least shortly after doing so? Are you sure you are putting your son's best interests first and not your own feelings?

If you cannot honestly answer yes to all of the above, then you need to give it a lot more thought before following through on any attempts to have him back in your life again. This is something that can, and will, have a permanent impact on your child, whether good or bad. Children are so easily hurt when they feel rejected by a parent, so to become involved in his life again, and then change your mind about it later, would be devestating to your son. So, again, I ask you to please give it a lot of soul searching.

But if you can honestly answer yes to all of the above questions, then by all means, go see an attorney and do all you can to be that boy's dad again. If you truly believe and know with all your heart that you can be a good father to him, be there for him all of the time and not just when it's convenient, then my suggestion and advice is to fight to regain your parental rights.

As it is, your son has now been rejected by two "dads", his biological father and his stepfather, which has to be so hurtful to him. These feelings of rejection can be incredibly painful, and can impact his life in a permanent way. He needs to know he is worthy of being loved by his dad, and that he IS loved by his dad.

So if you can do it with no hesitation, then by all means, yes, go fight for your son.

But only do it if you KNOW you can and will be doing it for the right reasons, and will be a really good, loving, caring and responsible dad to him.
