Hydrolysis - using water to split a molecule that has formed via a condensation reaction
Photolysis - using the energy from light to split a molecule (ie, ultraviolet light depleting the ozone layer)

An element is a substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances. An atom is a single piece of an element. If you break an atom apart, you no longer have that substance.
A chemical reaction can't break down an element, but it can break down a molecule.
Nuclear fission, the splitting of an atom's nucleus, will break an atom down into two or more different atoms and various forms of radiation.Fission usually occurs when an element is bombarded by neutrons. These particles smash into the nucleus and break it apart. For example, fission of uranium-235 in nuclear reactors is used to release energy:235U + n0 --> 236U -->144Ba + 89Kr + 3n0 + 177MeVThe additional neutrons released result in a chain reaction with 3 more uranium atoms reacting. An opposite process is fusion, where two or more elements combine and release energy. This is what happens in the sun.
a molecule
It's an element. Ordinary methods of breaking down chemicals, like catalysts and enzymes, can only get a contaminant down to its constituent elements - if you want to break down carbon monoxide, for instance, you'd wind up with a pile of carbon and some oxygen which would go off into the air as all gases do. Chlorine's already an element so you can't go any farther.
By trying to break it down into other substances by chemical or physical means. If it eventually breaks down, it is not an element.

You can't. An element is a pure substance. I think you mean compound...
that would be an element ;)
Lithium is an element. As such, it has no other substance in it, it is pure lithium. If you wished to analyse it further, you would have to break it down into subatomic particles.
A pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by physical or chemical means is an element. This is because Elements can't be broken down chemically into other substances because there is nothing to break them down into.
Basically, if they couldn't break it down into anything simpler, they figured it was an element. Often, they were right. But they often blew themselves up in the process.
Try to break it down by physical and chemical means until you cant really break it down anymore, that's your best chance of identifying it as a pure substance. To help you identify it, there are each elements physical properties,(color, shape, texture, states at different temperatures, and other things that can be observed without change to the substance.) which are better to use for observance than Chemical Properties, because they usually cant be reversed and cause change to the material.
