no, the light has nothing to do with the alternator working properly, the light is only to warn you that it isn't charging the battery properly.

The alternator is not getting power? At any of the wires or just the main/largest one? If you are testing the large wire, this is the output side that runs to the battery. Note that the "fuse" is whatever fuse is connected to the "ALT" light.
