The idea with the question is the order of succession, as in who is next in charge.... When it is a simple question, like if the president dies, or is incapable of functioning, then the vice president, and then the speaker of the house. The formal order is very clear in sections and amendments to the Constitution of the United States of America. If however, just like everywhere else, there is a sort of mess, and people are dying all over the place from something like a really heavy duty plague or major catastrophe or something which makes matters not really clear: it'll be like the fog of war.... All bets are off and the rest of us outside of the Beltway will be working for water, food and not dying from the latest germ from somewhere, or home-grown... then, the Constitution will still be the final statement. The only problem is that nobody will be listening... The order of succession is constitutionally clear, so long as there is no really big problem and people die in an orderly fashion. The 25th Amendment to the Constitution is the major formal statement, along with the Presidential Succession Act of 1947.
Dennis Hastert until Jan. 4, 2007 when Nancy Pelosi became Speaker of the House.
The Vice President would be the new leader. Currently (as of April 2008), the position is held by Richard B. Cheney.
Dick Cheney was a vice president for a president who was generally incompetent. That allowed him to push the president aside and run many of the policy meetings that a president would usually oversee. Additionally, Cheney had longer and closer relationships with many of the other cabinet members than George W. Bush had, allowing him to have greater sway.
If President George W. Bush left the White House or was assassinated or died, his position would e taken over by the Vice President, in this case, Dick Cheney.

According to the 20th Amendment to the United States Constitution President Bush's term ended at noon on January 20th, 2009. Until that time, regardless of the election, Bush was still the sitting President and Cheney was still the sitting Vice President. If Bush would have left office for any reason, the line of succession would have remained in effect. As such Dick Cheney would have been President until noon on Inauguration day. Barack Obama would not have been the President under any circumstances until that time.
The president who was worst in spelling was the man who would become our first president. His name is George Washington.

The most recent Cabinet member to become U. S. President was Herbert Hoover, who served as Secretary of Commerce from 1921 until 1928. (The most recent Cabinet member to become U. S. Vice President was Dick Cheney, who served as Secretary of Defense from 1989 until 1993.)

Dick Cheney would have been unelectable because too many people feared and distrusted him. He also has no personal charisma and would have been unable to connect with most of the American public.
