Because in doing this it strengthen their faith. Faith gets stronger in times of trial. It would have been very easy for the Israelites to believe that God would save them if He had done it instantly. But in taking so long God tested their faith and made the wait well worth it. This applies not only to the Israelites but to us and our everyday life and walk in faith.
