If I have leaking coolant on a 1996 Trooper but cannot see source of leak and the engine is not overheating and coolant is full what could cause this?

The head gasket sits between the head and the engine block if it is leaking out where you can see the coolant, yes you can smell the coolant if it is leaking into the engine no you cannot smell the coolant. You can check the oil to see if it has coolant in the oil if it does then the head gasket might be blown.

There should be a drain on the bottom of the radiator somewhere. If you cannot find one, then remove the lower radiator hose and drain the coolant form that location.

Look inside the radiator while the engine is running if the pump is good you will see the fluid swirling or at least moving around, if the shaft is difficult to move or there is play in the shaft then the bearings are going bad, if there is coolant seeping out of the weep hole, coolant seeping or leaking from the gasket, if when running with the cap on the hoses never stiffen up ( pressurize ), Overheating issues that cannot be tracked down to the radiator or thermostat, coolant flow is not vigorous.

Head Gaskets are a seal between the engine block and cylinder heads. It keeps oil, coolant, and pressure inside the engine. Usually if its "blown" the car cannot be driven due to lack of pressure in the cylinders. Smaller problems like a cracked or leaking gasket will be noticed by overheating, leaking of fluids and mild to severe decrease in engine performance. Since it is inside the engine usually replacing one involves removing the engine. Cost for repairs can run from $500 to about $2300
What is wrong when the coolant keeps disappearing but not visibly leaking?
First, if you only look after it has disappeared, there is no coolant left to be leaking Second, coolant will often leak only under pressure, when it expands from being hot. This often happens when the car is moving, so cannot be observed, or escapes as steam. These leaks can be from small cracks in hoses, often under the clips; from pinholes in the radiator body; from under the pressure cap if the seal is badly worn. If some coolant is already missing, the remainder will heat up faster, setting up a viscious cylcle. In vehicles with an overflow bottle, overheated water goes to the bottle, to be sucked back later by the reduced pressure as the water cools again. In extreme overheating (boiling) the coolant can overflow the bottle, so less is available for sucking back later. Also if the hose to the bottle is cracked or loose, the reduced pressure will suck in air instead of water from the bottle. This leads to a situation where the radiator is quite low (so susceptible to fast overheating) while the overflow bottle contains water, so the user thinks there is enough water and never refills it. Coolant can also leak into the engine block, but this will not "keep" happening, as quite a small amount will cause the engine to stop functioning.

Radiator, radiator cap, radiator hoses, water pump, coolant reservior and heater core are the more obvious areas. If you notice coolant in your oil it can be caused by a blown head gasket or damaged coolant sleeve in the head of the enging. If you cannot see any coolant leaks outside of the vehicle, check the floor mats on the interior. If you find coolant there, it more than likely is a heater core.

Where is it leaking? That pressure test sounds funny, why would you pressurize only the pump and radiator? If you are leaking coolant outside the engine, locate the source. If you are losing it from the radiator but cannot find a puddle suspect a head gasket problem. Check the Radiator cap first, if it is bad high pressure coolant will travel back to the overflow bottle.

the reason that the heat would cease to work when the car overheats is that the car is low on coolant. coolant is warmed by the engine as it transfers heat away from the engine. the heated coolant passes through heater hose and through the heater core. The blower motor blows air through the heater core warming the air and pushes the warm air through the vents in the car to you. the heater core is a small radiator in the dashboard of most vehicles. If there isn't coolant in the car, the engine becomes too hot thus the overheating. a side effect of this is that the lack of coolant means that coolant cannot get to the heater core to be warmed to warm you

Use fuel system cleaner, if it doesn't help you could have a problem with the cadalidic converter or the head gasket. This could be because you have coolant burning inside the combustion chamber(s). If you are leaking coolant, but cannot find the leak i.e. no puddles, then it is probable that your head gasket is leaking, your head is cracked, or both. If you are handy with tools, rent/buy a compression tester. If you have low compression in two adjacent cylinders, you probably have a blown head gasket. Not an easy fix. Sorry to say that. You may be able to get a solution from AAP that can fix the head gasket leaks. I do not know what the brand name is but they say it works. Just drain the coolant, rerun the solution through, flush and add fresh coolant. I have never tried that though. Good luck.
