In the 18th century, Benjamin Franklin conducted extensive research in electricity, selling his possessions to fund his work. In June 1752 he is reputed to have attached a metal key to the bottom of a dampened kite string and flown the kite in a storm-threatened sky. A succession of sparks jumping from the key to the back of the hand showed that lightning was indeed electrical in nature so Tesla is most famous for conceiving the rotating magnetic field principle (1882) and then using it to invent the induction motor together with the accompanying alternating current long-distance electrical transmission system (1888). His patents and theoretical work still form the basis for modern alternating current electric power systems. He also developed numerous other electrical and mechanical devices including the fundamental principles and machinery of wireless technology, including the high frequency alternator, the "AND" logic gate and the Tesla coil, as well as other devices such as the bladeless turbine, the spark plug and numerous other inventions.

With all his inventions all people knew Nikola Tesla was America's greatest electrical and mechanical engineer and the world knew it too. I imagine this would give Tesla an idea that he was an electrical and mechanical engineer.

His mayor deed was the invention of the electrical system the whole word uses daily. Then comes the wireless contribution. All wireless devices are based on the Tesla coil. A Tesla coil is an electrical resonant transformer circuit invented by Nikola Tesla around 1891. He was also the pioneer on remote control.
This is probably the question that I can't answer. I spend a whole bunch of time reading about him and his inventions. Now where Nikola stated why he became a scientist. I could give you my opinion about that. Nikola Tesla had a elevated IQ. In his mind, he could see where the rest had failed in physics and electricity related fields. He saw electrical engines throwing sparks to the sides when they were put to work. He knew that was not right. A teacher got mad with him because he deviced in his head a way to get rid of the sparks. He had to correct these problems on his own, which he did.
