That probably depends on how it is used, the author's personality, and what else is contained in the article. I would say that someone who is uncertain about using it would probably be better served not doing it.

A really good, confident author, however, could have a humorous aside in an article like that... for instance, if an author were talking about his or her own past experiences with smoking, there could be humor about the efforts to justify it and to blow off the health challenges as the author is leading the reader to the gentle conclusion that there is no way to justify smoking if you care about your health and the health of the people around you.
