I have been a medical biller for over 10 years. It is always whoever is going to the doctor that one's insurance will pay. So, the husband goes to the doctor it is his insurance that would be the primary insurance and the wife's insurance could then be billed for the balance, i.e. copay, deductible, etc.

Does health insurance include dental insurance?

No, medical insurance and dental insurance are two different products. In fact, employers often go through different insurance companies for each in an effort to find the right price. Your medical insurance card will typically not cover dental, although big ticket things like a broken jaw or oral surgery are actually considered medical. However, an employer who offers medical in many cases (but not all) also offers dental to its employees.

Why would a person need to get private health insurance?

If a person does not have a job, or if their job does not provide health insurance, then the person might choose to buy private health insurance. It is usually less expensive to purchase health insurance through ones employer, but part time, contingent or contract personnel might not qualify for insurance through their employer. It is a good idea to have medical insurance at all times because illness or injury can strike any time and can rapidly become very expensive.

Purchasing Medical Insurance for Yourself?

Many people enjoy having medical benefits through their employers. However, some people do not have this opportunity or find that employer-provided medical insurance does not meet their needs. People who choose to purchase their own medical insurance separately have many options through various insurance providers. For those shopping for insurance, websites that collect data from several providers and display the information so that it is easy to compare policy features are good starting points. Shoppers can use this information to determine which providers and policies may be a good fit for them. They can then approach those providers directly.

Should you purchase term life insurance in addition to life insurance offered by your employer?

Keep in mind that usually life insurance through your employer does not leave with you when you leave work. So if it is 10 years and you decide to leave, you will at that time have to get your own individual life insurance. Now you are 10 years older and your height and weight could be different and you could have medical conditions. Yes, it is a good idea to get life insurance in addition to your work insurance. This way you will be covered at a younger age.
