You are probably thinking of oxygen and something else, but there are no gasses in the atmosphere universally essential for life. Carbon dioxide occurs when there is an elevated concentration of CO2 in the blood stream. This is referred to as hypercapnia. Some of the symptoms displayed include headaches, rapid breathing, shortness of breath, muscle twitches and others. If exposure to CO2 occurs, death ultimately occurs due to a lack of O2 in the blood.
