U.S. Federal regulations permit you to transfer your wireless phone number to any wireless carrier you wish. But there is a penalty--a fee--to be paid to the current carrier for leaving before the contracted period has ended. It could be as much as $200 or more per line of service. First call your existing service and ask if you are still under contract. If you are, ask for the contract expiration date and ask for the cost of leaving the service while still under contract. With this information you can decide what to do. When you ask these questions, the customer service representative will know you are considering leaving their service. Your carrier will want to keep you as a customer and will likely offer you incentives to stay. If you accept, your contract will be extended for two years. You can accept the offer that is what you want, or you can decline, or you can note the offer and explain you need time to consider it or discuss it. You will not need to make a decision right then. If you know for certain you are going to switch, just thank them for the information and explain you will consider it, but do not tell them you will be switching and DO NOT cancel your service. If you cancel with your carrier, you will lose your phone number. You are ready to change carriers when you are either out of contract or have decided the change is worth the penalty, and when you've studied the other carriers and chosen a new one, based on factors such as coverage, features, equipment, and price. But do not cancel your existing service or notify them; your new carrier will do that for you, with your permission. Now go see the representatives of your chosen new carrier. Bring with you your ID and a copy of your bill showing your current carrier, mobile number, and account number. Know your password with your carrier and your Social Security Number. Also have your old phone with you. Explain that you wish to switch carriers and ask them to check that you qualify with the new service and whether there will be a deposit required. Also, talk to the representative about what can be done about transferring anything stored on your old phone to your new one. If you're satisfied with what you hear, you're ready to continue. Now choose your equipment, your plan, and any add-on services. Equipment pricing will depend on your agreement to accept a one- or two-year contract with the carrier. (The one-year agreement is not a particularly good deal.) Remember that you will have a 30-day period in which to cancel; after that your contract will be in full force, with a substantial penalty (charge) for cancellation. When you have a package you like, the representative will process the new activation and, with the information you've brought, arrange for the cancellation of your old service and the transfer of your phone number to the new service. You pay now any equipment and accessories costs as well as any deposit due. (The deposit may need to be paid in cash or by debit card; check first.) Service plan costs are all paid later upon receipt of your bill, which will also have an activation fee (about $26). The carrier will arrange the activation of the new phone and the number transfer. (Be prepared; your old telephone will have to be turned off while the switch is made.) In the best case you'll leave the store with a new working phone (and the old one, which you keep). But if your old provider dawdles, the transfer could take up to 24 hours. Now thoroughly try out the phone and its features, your service, and the coverage, so you can make any changes you want to within 30 days of the sale. Don't be shy about insisting on different equipment or even dropping the service if it doesn't work for you. But if you're not going to stay, allow the time you need to repeat this process. (The above procedures apply for contract carriers in the U.S., where Verizon operates, and some other places where business is similarly done. In many other countries the wireless business works very differently.)

How do you switch Verizon phone service?

If you wish to switch service providers - you need to contact Verizon and get your Port Authorization Code (PAC). Once you have your PAC - you contact your new supplier, and give them the code - so they can switch your number from Verizon. The only thing to be aware of is - Verizon can charge you for issuing the code (they would prefer you to stay with them !)
