Persistent hypertension is known to weaken small blood vessels in the brain and elsewhere. This weakening may eventually lead to bleeding into the subarachnoid space or other areas of the brain, which can in turn cause a stroke.
Antihypertensive medications are very effective at lowering blood pressure and thus decreasing the risk of hemorrhage.
