If an orange is orange why isn't a lime called a green or a lemon called a yellow?

OrangesThe fruit was called orange for its distinctive *flavour*...not its colour, via the latin OR for "gold"(Oranges, while potentially being misconstrued as a "golden fruit", look nothing like the mineral Au in any form but they apparantly taste like it)...it's association as a colour came later.

Because bananas turn brown and "Hey, I'm eating a brown yellow" would probobly be a pretty weird thing to think to yourself.

∙ 12y agoWe don't call things by their color because if we did, everything that was yellow would be called "yellows." When someone would say "I want a yellow," we wouldn't know if they wanted a banana or if they wanted a pencil.

The answer is because the person found out the colour 'orange' first so named it orange whereas the lemon was named before the the colour yellow was made.

oranges were called oranges before the color orange was named. that is probably why. there is no other explanation. they are just called oranges.
