Being Russian does not necessarily mean being Jewish, there are Christian and Muslim Russians too. Judaism is passed down through the mother, so if your maternal grandmother is Jewish, then you are Jewish. Jewish people from Eastern Europe and Russia are generally Ashkenazi, which is a group that has certain customs (rituals, foods, songs etc.) in contrast to Sephardim (Middle Eastern or North African Jews) who have different customs.

Most Jewish Russians come from Western Russia, either from Ukraine, Belarus or the areas between those countries and Moscow or St. Petersberg. Those Jews are overwhelmingly Ashkenazi. However, Jews from the Caucasus region of Russia are more often Sephardic.
