The LGBT community contributes a lot to the US economy. The percentage it contributes is directly related to the percentage of the population that fall under LGBT. Let us assume that you mean the number of suicides by LGBT students per year. The difficulty in answering this question is that most media ban reporting on suicide for fear of copycats and many LGBT students are closetted. The exact number is therefore impossible to pinpoint. A recent study in Taiwan claims that 20% of LGBT youth have seriously contemplated or attempted suicide, while a national survey in Britain showed that LGBT students have suicide rates 3 times higher than the average heterosexual. Bullying rates for LGBT students are also 68% higher than heterosexuals in high school. The harrowing statistics are indicative of society's cruel treatment of LGBT people. Until we can overcome the homophobia engrained in our society and learn to accept these people, we can never prevent these statistics.

Although the statistics around this issue is very hazy and taboo, a recent study in Taiwan claims that 20% of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people have contemplated or attempted suicide at least once in their life. This is shocking since Taiwan's LGBT rights is fairly advanced compared to other countries and their suicide rate is already very high. Sadly, this is a reflection of society's treatment of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people in our society. The only way to lower these harrowing statistics and events is to raise awareness and accept LGBT people openly into our society.
