Check Engine Light

Chevy Cobalt

If the check engine light stays on how do you get the fault code on a 1997 Dodge Stratus?

Turn the ignition key to battery on/off three times. The third time you leave the battery power on and read the check engine light. It will blink the first number of the code, pause, then blink the second number of the code. I.E. a code 35 will blink the engine check light three times then pause then another five times. It will pause again and blink another code if such. At the end, it will code a 55 or end of test code. This will let you know that all the fault codes have been displayed and the test is over. Haynes manuals have the codes in them for reference. I used to get EVAP and O2 sensor codes on my '97 Stratus. I just ignored them even tho the check engine light was on for some time then would go out. Periodically they'd come back on for a while and then go out, recording the fault code into the computer. Good Luck. Rod.

On a 1997 you will probably need a scan tool.
