So they can charge more for the better video and sound. Greed.
Many television stations have been using digital signals for at least 30 years. They turned them into analog signals at the antenna for broadcast. Now they are simply leaving them in their original form.
Yes, certain stations only broadcast in digital bands and can only be seen through a digital tuner. Though these are generally less mainstream programming, but yes they are extra stations.
Yes. That what they are switching to. There will no longer be analog broadcast.
Digital signals produce a higher quality picture and many programs can be broadcast on a single digital channel, whereas only one program can be broadcast on an analog channel
If connected to a digital to analog converter box , yes.
Without going into the fundamentals of analog and digital data transmission methods, a digital transmission can contain a higher amount of data than an analog transmission within the same frequency range. The change from analog TV to digital TV allows the content providers to have multiple TV stations per channel. Like say channel 13 use to have just the broadcast of one program in analog, but now there is more space, or bandwidth, to broadcast 3 or 4 programs on the same channel. 13.1, 13.2 and so on. Really the limit is how low of quality video the content provider wants to broadcast at. It's like changing the setting on youtube from 240p to 1080p. 240p loads faster than 1080p, but 1080p looks better.
Some converter boxes have an 'Analog pass through' feature allowing for just that. All stations will be required to broadcast in digital as of June. While this date has been pushed back a few times, this new deadline seems fairly solid. Get the converter box, you will love the new stations and services. There is also rebates so the boxes cost almost nothing. The truth is that some translators and some low power TV Stations will be transmitting NTSC Analog after June 12, 2009 so with a NTSC Analog TV Tuner and an ATSC Digital TV Tuner you will receive all channels.
Analog radio was broadcast from a studio out to listeners for a certain distance. Digital Radio is similar in what is broadcast but the quality of signal is better with Digital then analog. Podcasting is done over the Internet and is a rebroadcast of radio
Digital is an upgraded audio and visual signal. There will be a transition in the United States on February 17, 2009, where all broadcast analog signals will be converted to digital signal.
They will be assigned to other services.
Digital data requires less bandwidth than analog data (e.g. new digital television broadcast compared to old analog broadcast), so more data can fit in the same frequency (e.g. DSL compared to analog modems). This is the primary advantage, although it is also generally stated that data is easier to recover and more tolerant towards interference.
A digital converter converts the analog signals that are received by your TV to digital signals. Most TV providers only offer digital TV these days, so you only need it if you're still using analog.
