One or more of the thousands of proteins found in strawberries causes the allergic reaction to strawberry. Scientist at the Lund University of Sweden has identified a protein that is believed to cause the majority of allergic reactions to strawberry. This protein is very similar to the allergy causing protein found in birch pollen. Individuals that are allergic to birch pollen can have a cross allergy reaction to some berries, fruits and to some vegetables.
Researchers have found that the protein that caused the allergic reaction is Not found in the white strawberry. This protein seems to be related somehow to the red coloration of the red strawberry.
And you won't be able to enjoy strawberry poptarts.
