If you are being hated on because of your sexuality what should you do?

It can be hard to be different, especially when everybody knows about it, and they do mean things because of it. Here is my advice, assuming you are a teenager:

1. Don't impulsively disclose your sexuality to people who might be hostile. Take your time.

2. Deny deny deny. Who's gay? You? Never! You're not denying yourself anything. You're denying them. You'll tell people when you're good and ready.

3. Learn to distinguish between dangerous and harmless haters. Harmless haters just like to hear the wind whistle between their teeth. You can smack those ones down, and even stand up to a gang of them, and win. But stay away from the dangerous ones. Dangerous haters will try to drag you by the neck behind their pick up truck until you are dead, and other ridiculous things, because they are completely insane. You can never reason with them.

4. Find somebody you can rely on and talk to. You need someone to hug you and accept you and not pressure you. If not your parents, then another family member, a teacher, a schoolmate, or even a stranger (me!) you found on the internet. Keep looking until you find someone.

5. Talk to your parents and teachers about any bullying that is going on. It is unacceptable to be bullied at school, and anyone who does it should be punished.

6. If authority figures can't or won't do anything, punch bullies in the face. Put up your two fists and run at them. Don't stop swinging. You'd be surprised how effective fighting back can be. Don't ever let them see you cry. You're job is to make them cry. Don't stop punching bullies until you get suspended. You'll have sent a strong message to part time wimps who think they can beat you down, free of charge.

7. Get some friends who will stick up for you. If people are talking trash about you, get a friend who talks trash about them. If people are pushing you into lockers, get a friend who will push them into lockers. If there is a teacher mocking you, get a teacher who mocks him. Fight fire with fire. Stick up for them to set the example. Nobody messes with your friends!

8. Defeat the mob mentality with politeness. Once I taunted by a fairly harmless group of boys at school. Instead of being defeated or yelling, I just calmly said, "Yes I'm the first gay person you ever met" and shook his hand. His hand was as cold as ice, because he was so scared. I stole all the words out of his mouth. They never said anything to me about it again.

9. Understand your limits. If you are at the end of your rope, don't keep doing the same thing. If school is making you suicidal, stop going to school. If your parents are killing you, run away. Nobody will give you this advice, but it is the best advice anyone can give you. If nobody can step up and defend you and make you feel at home, then you need to find a new home.

10. Don't drown your troubles away with drugs or alcohol. There is nothing wrong with drugs or alcohol, but it is wrong to use them as a crutch. You can fall down that hole and never reappear. Plus parties can be the most dangerous places for people who are different.

11. Ponder how great your life will be when you escape the place you are living. While you are becoming a totally new person in your new surroundings, they will be the same old boring twits they always were, satisfied with their petty little lives and stupid ideas. You will cherish the good times you had with the good people there, and write off the rest. And life will go on.

12. Have lots of great sex. If you can't get laid right now, masturbate to your favorite fantasies. Think about how much they hate it, and how awesome it is you are doing it against their will.
