As an avid bodybuilder I am qualified to answer this: You will most definitely gain excess weight depending on how much you take. Remember, too much of anything will metabolize into fat, even good quality protein. It's all about balance. Depending on what kind of results your looking to achieve pertaining to your body; I would substitute the whey protein into your diet in lieu of other types of protein. This will help you avoid all of the saturated fats that come with chicken and steak. If you like fish then your golden. Remember, the only way to build muscle tissue is through resistance exercise, ie. weight lifting, swimming, running, etc.

If you are interested in taking whey protein but you do not work out too often would you still gain muscle and lose fat?

No, you will not. Increasing your protein intake helps you build muscle bulk, not lose fats. Proteins are not stored in the body the way carbs are. So once you take proteins, you either build muscle with it, or it goes out the other end in your urine. NO pain, no gain. You gotta work for it, if you really want it. It's true that proteins are only used to build muscle, when muscle needs to be repaired. But excess protein can be converted to glucose. excess glucose can be stored as fat.

Does a protein help build tissues such as bone and muscles?

While protein does not play a vital role in building bone tissue, it does help by speeding up the growth of muscle tissue cells, so it can be used to build muscle in the body. The primary function of a protein, when consumed in the diet, is to repair and build cells, including the muscle cells damaged when exercising to the point of momentary fatigue. Proteins are present in all living organisms and include many essential biological compounds such as enzymes and antibodies. Proteins have often been described as the 'backbone' of cells as they possess a structural role in the cell walls. Protein is needed for all tissue growth, repair and replenishment. If there is more protein available than necessary for building blocks, it can also be used as a source of dietary energy. Can men over 50 build muscle?

Absolutely. Maybe not as easily as a 20-year-old, though! Ask your healthcare provider first and see what kind of supplements/multivitamins/protein you should taking. Anyone can build muscle, the main problem at that age and older is joint stiffness that discourages one from working out.

Who Needs a High Protein Diet?

High protein diet plans have gone in and out of vogue and they do often present health risks in certain people and body types, however, they can be useful if incorporated into a healthy, full diet with all the vitamins and nutrients you need if you are looking to build muscle or add weight. Protein doesn't always need to come from meat. Many effective high protein diets use protein powders, peanut butter and other sources of protein. It's worth experimenting to find a high protein diet that you can be comfortable with for the best results.
