pull the cap off of your oil filler tube and look for a light chocolate brown substance - if you see that then water is leaking into your oil system - also, WITH THE ENGINE COLD remove your radiator cap and look for oil floating on top of your radiator fluid - if you have that scenario then you've got oil making it's way into your cooling system. Either case is not good, infact they're equally bad, pointing to a blown head gasket (best case scenario) which is usually accompanied by a warped head that will need machining or a cracked head that will need to be repaired or replaced, or worst case, a cracked block which means the engine block itself is ruined. No amount of water pump or thermostat changes will fix your problem IF you have water in your oil or oil in your water. NOW FOR SOME GOOD NEWS - you could be lucky enough to have a plugged radiator, sediment, corrosion and gunk people add to their radiators can plug them beyond reason rendering them completely in effective. Get to a good (read "trustworthy") radiator shop and have them test it for you. You should be able to tell them that you've replaced the WP and T-Stat, that you have no oil in the water and no water in the oil and need their expert opinion. With a little luck and a couple hundred bucks you will be on your way. Believe me, all the scenarios above (blown head gasket, cracked head, cracked block) will cost LOADS more to fix than a plugged radiator. Best of luck.

check your intake manifold gasket.

How do you know if thermostat on 2000 grand am needs replacement?

if your car over heats alot then that is a pretty good sign. aslong as it isn't your water pump. but thermostat is a good place to start. if you replace the thermostat and it still over heats. (assuming that is why you are asking) then it could be the water pump.

What should you check first if you have no leak and changed the thermostat in 97 escort and have no heat?

I had no heat in my escort either. A new thermostat, cooling system flush, new heater core, another new thermostat, ect. but nothing worked. Still only slightly warm air from the vents. The thermostat housing has a thermostat bypass in it. This bypass is always circulating coolant through your radiator. I plugged mine off with a thermostat gasket and now my car heats and blows hot air with no complications. Good luck.

With no thermostat in my car it doesn't over heat but has no heat put a thermostat in it still has no heat but over heats why?

if it has a plastic impeller inside water pump it may be broke or faulty thermostat .check by boiling in water till temp its suppose to open

1998 4.0 liter jeep Cherokee over heats i changed water pump and radiator thermostat and still over heats?

Many times after a Jeep cooling system is repaired, air bubbles trapped in the system will cause a overheat situation. If it is a 4.0l, with the engine cool remove the heater hose that is connected to the thermostat housing and fill the cooling system with the engine off. When coolant starts coming out of the engine side the system is almost as full as it gets.

If there is not white smoke or water in your oil and there is no oil in your collant and you just changed the radiator the water pump and the thermostat why is it still over heating?

If it only over heats at idle it is a bad fan clutch. If not its the typical Mercedes overheat. Try this link: http://www.dieselgiant.com/thermostatreplacementandmodif.htm

Replaced thermostat but cold air and still over heats?

Coolant at proper level? System air bound and needs to be purged? Water pump not circulating coolant? Defective thermostat? Collapsed radiator hose?

After installing a new Thermostat in your 96 Z34 Monte Carlo it still heats up in traffic What is your next logical step?

cooling fans or water pump
