if your car over heats alot then that is a pretty good sign. aslong as it isn't your water pump. but thermostat is a good place to start. if you replace the thermostat and it still over heats. (assuming that is why you are asking) then it could be the water pump.

The thermostat on a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am 2.4 liter 4 cylinder is located on the side of the engine. It can be found by following the upper radiator hose.
Thermostat replacementI received a quote for my 2000 Grand Prix 3.6 from the Chevrolet Dealer and it was around $300.00, for drain/fill antifreeze and removal/replacement of thermostat. I did my own for around $25.00, cost of thermostat, gasket and antifreeze. I took some short cuts and works fine just remember you have to bleed the air from the cooling system with the little screw on the top of the thermostat housing. If not the engine will over heat and you will have an air lock in the engine cooling system and it will lock-up.
Check coolant level Perhaps thermostat is sticking and needs replacement
the thermostat is located just behind the water pump . follow your bottom hose

I replaced the thermostat on my 2000 grand prix myself and a replacement thermostat only costs about 8 or 9 dollars. 2000's and 2002's should be very similar or the same. Having a mechanic do it shouldn't be more than 100 to 150 dollars. If you have the right tools, it can be done very easily. Here's a link if you want to do it yourself. I never fixed anything under the hood on any car before and I was able to do this. http://www.pfyc.com/supportfiles/tstat/tstat.htm
