Some of the elements in your body are naturally radioactive. e.g. potassium, some carbon, etc.

You get a larger exposure to radiation from the decay of potassium in your body, than you will from a smoke detector based upon radioactive americium.

What is the purpose of wearing a film badge when working with ionizing radiation sources?

The film badge measures radiation exposure; an exposed film badge indicates how much radiation a worker has recieved.

What are three of the natural sources that give off radiation?

- Radiation of cosmic origin- Radiation from radioactive elements (and decay products) of the Earth- Internal radiation of organisms

What sources of energy were available on the early earth?

UV radiation and lightning

What is a radiation injury?

Radiation injuries are caused by ionizing radiation emitted by sources such as the sun, x-ray and other diagnostic machines, tanning beds, and radioactive elements

How may you be exposed to Ionizing radiation?

Common sources of ionizing radiation are alpha particles, beta particles, ultra-violet light, X-rays and gamma rays. Everybody is exposed to small amounts of these radiations every day just from general background radiation or from sunlight.

What external sources can cause non-Hodgkin's lymphomas?

People exposed to certain pesticides and ionizing radiation have a higher than average chance of developing this disease.

Cosmic radiation and radiation from terrestrial sources are examples of?

Natural background radiation

Radiation sources storage solutions?

Radiation sources are stored in containers which provide shielding to make handling and transport of the sources safe. The amount of shielding depends on the type of radiation-a gamma source requires more than a alpha or beta emitter.

Which do you think will penetrate farther into a block of lead x-rays or gamma rays explain why?

Gamma radiation and x-radiation are identical if they both have the same wave length. The only difference between x-radiation and gamma radiation is that gamma radiation is produced by natural processes while x-radiation is man-made. The block of lead will not be able to tell the difference between the two sources and will attenuate both the same.

What energy sources are in photosynthesis?

sun, radiation

Why doesn't radiation penetrate apolo13 when it went to the moon?

Radiation is a risk to all space and earth travelers. Your space radiation exposure increases when you take an international flight. The earth's magnetic field protects us from most cosmic radiation. The Apollo Astronauts (as all astronauts) were exposed to increased radiation when they traveled outside of earth's magnetic field from two sources. First, the relatively stable galactic radiation from deep space. Second, variable Solar radiation from the Sun which we call Solar Activity. So the answer is radiation did penetrate the Apollo 13 spacecraft during their journey, as it does all spacecraft, just not enough to make the crew sick or significantly increase their risk of cancer. Are we exposed to radiation from radioisotopes on a daily basis?

Yes we are! Though the amount is so small that it really has no major effect on us. This radiation does cause some genetic mutations if it encounters the DNA of the cell, but there are many other possible sources of mutations that make it hard to clearly blame a given mutation on radiation at the levels due to ordinary daily exposure.

Why airplane pilots wear film badges?

The film badges (radiation dosimeters) indicate if a pilot has been exposed to higher levels of ionizing radiation, as from cosmic rays at high altitudes, or from other sources. Limiting the periodic exposure prevents unsafe effects on the flight personnel. Most US pilots now use a different device, a thermoluminescent detector or TLD. So for short: Because they work at high altitudes, pilots are exposed to high levels of background radiation from cosmic rays. To monitor their radiation exposure, pilots wear film badges.
