If you had a new alternator put in and now your meter shows discharging as engine runs could the hookup be backwards?

Not likely. But you would get a big spark putting the cables on the battery. Sounds like you have a short, or bad altenator, battery

Replacing alternator on 95 Olds AuroraAlternator access is underneath. first, disconnect battery wire by fender well & loosen serpentine belt. Remove plug-in and battery wire on Alternator. Remove the 2 bolts positioned at 6 & 12 oclock behind alternator then a 3rd bold is a bracket bolt behind alternator that sits next to the engine. Suggest when reinstalling, leave each bolt loose until all 3 are in place then tighten. Plugin, hookup battery wire, put belt back in place, fasten battery wire.In my experience I had to partially remove the air box to maneuver the alt out/in. You will end up bending the rad if you don't :/
