The first thing you should do is call your State Education Department and find out what the requirements are to change from secondary to elementary teaching and what is required to get your teaching license in elementary education. Some states now require that you take and pass a standardized test before you can get your license. States that once issued lifetime licenses now issue 5-year licenses. You have to teach for some of the five years and take a certain number of college credit hours or CEU's in order to renew the license. The hours usually have to be in your chosen field.
If you do not already have a lead or leads on where you might teach, you should also check to find out what the projected job prospects will be when you are ready to find a position. It would also be good to find out from the college you will attend what courses you will need to take to switch to the elementary level.
You might also check into what minors are available and which ones would enhance finding a position. Minors in Reading or any of the areas of Special Education, as well as other minors, might be worth pursuing.
It's possible that your training in secondary English would be applicable to the elementary level, so it would be good to ask about that, too. If your state recognizes life experience, it is possible that you could switch to teaching English at the elementary level without taking more courses or the number of courses needed would be decreased.
