It depends which state you live in. Illinois, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Washington D.C. require lincenses to own firearms. New York requires a license to own a handgun, and California requires registration of state-legal "assult weapons." If you have a rifle but no license in any of the mentioned states, you are breaking the law. If you take it to a "gun range," you will probably go to jail. Lots of ranges have firearms that you may use at their range for a fee, so that would be the recommended option.
