It seems that I get about 3 miles more per gallon traveling west to east, than the transverse. Any facts to verify? No, this is simply a myth. There is no difference at all unless you happen to be going up a hill when traveling east.

Depends on wether one counts clockwise or counter-clockwise. Assuming starting at the south point and traveling 112.5 degrees from there one ends up at west-north-west. Going counter-clockwise and traveling "backwards" one ends up at east-north-east.
There is no way to answer this because there is no place where "East" stops. It's just a direction compared to where you are at the moment, so there's no place actually called "East." If you keep going in an easterly direction, you'll end up back where you started because the world is round.
You basically have to keep that type of buoy to your right if you are traveling up stream.
