But whether the scheduled task has run or whether it has defragged properly will depend on whether the PC was on, whether some program may have interrupted the process etc. As there isn't a very clear GUI, its difficult to actually ascertain the progress.

Fragmentation occurs as the computer is running. Files get moved around and it takes the computer longer to perform functions the more fragmented it becomes. You should defragment your hard drives once every 2 months or so. You can defragment by going to 'Start', 'My Computer", then double click on the icon for your hard drive. Then right click once on an empty spot on the window that opened up. Now click on 'Properties', then 'Tools', then click defragment.
