These could be hard drives, optical drives, or even some types of tape drives or other devices that were common back in the days of IDE. Nowadays, IDE is a thing of the past and has been replaced by the faster and more preferable SATA.

On an IDE cable you can put two IDE devices per cable. One is the master one is the slave. So you can have eight different devices..
