Two plus four equals six. So that would be six channels with two drives per channel, and that would make a total of twelve drives that could be attached rather than just eight. These could be hard drives, optical drives, or even some types of tape drives or other devices that were common back in the days of IDE. Nowadays, IDE is a thing of the past and has been replaced by the faster and more preferable SATA.
