To remove the ignition switch from a 1997 Pontiac Trans Sport, first disconnect the negative battery cable to ensure safety. Next, remove the steering column covers by unscrewing the screws holding them in place. Then, locate and disconnect the wiring harness from the ignition switch, and unscrew the ignition switch from its mounting bracket. Finally, carefully pull the switch out to complete the removal process.
Have you checked the ignition switch on the column . I had to replace the one in my 1977 Trans Am.
I don't know how to change the ignition switch but I have some advice. Don't screw with the ignition switch, buy the whole steering column. It will be cheaper and easier to change.
Try under the dash near the glove box.
the steering wheel has to be pulled off so you can get to the upper cover on the steering column to take the screws out to get it off and then you can get to the switch.
I can think of 5 things, if battery is charged, 1. Ignition switch has went bad or out of ajustment.2. Manuel trans- Clutch safety switch bad or out of adj. ( should be under dash.3. Auto trans. Neutral safety switch bad out of adj. 4. Starter bad5. If has one, starter relay bad
