It didn't really end suddenly. It simply stopped being so "wild" as it was settled. When it was the "Wild West", it was a frontier of human colonization that was then being settled. The people who went there were usually seeking adventure and were willing to face the dangers of the frontier, so it was only natural that these people would often times be rowdy. As the area became more urbanized and the towns evolved past the boom town state of being, the general populace gradually calmed down.

If the immigrant had no friends or family already in the US, he/she was doubly handicapped. Many Americans disliked immigrants so there developed racial discrimination. It was felt immigrants took away from Americans, did not respect our customs and traditions, were usually of a nationality that had strange religious or nationality practices, and usually congregated in small areas of the cities.
