In 1652, the Catholic colony of Rhode Island made slavery illegal, and the colony of Virginia had fewer than 500 slaves -- only three percent of its almost 17,000 colonists. The tobacco planters of Virginia were still dependent primarily on indentured servants for labor, the indentured servants not requiring an initial investment as did the buying of slaves.

Slavery began as early as 1652 and had reached to 6.3 % of the population by 1774. More important is the fact that financial and transportation of 60 to 90% of the American slave trade was in the full control of Rhode Island merchants.
Probably the same reason we had slavery everywhere else..... it was cheap labor. And it was legal. oh and also because people thought they could take advantageof the poor people and make them slaves because their masters were more rich than the slaves.
Oliver Cromwell was the Leader of Parliament in the year of 1652 when Christmas was banned. All shops were ordered to stay open and churches to stay closed. Hope this helps.

The three types of English Colonies in America were the New England Colonies to the north, the Middle Colonies in the middle, and the Southern Colonies in the south. The New England Colonies were New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts. The Middle Colonies were Delaware, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. The Southern Colonies were North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Maryland, and Virginia. The New England Colonies didn't need slaves to work mainly because they were mostly merchants. Rhode Island even outlawed slavery in 1652 but joined in on the slave trade to make a profit. In the Middle Colonies needed slaves a little more than New England, but only for Blacksmiths, Merchants, and ect. The Southern Colonies relied nearly completely on slaves to work on large plantations.
