In 1869 Wyoming's territorial legislature granted women the right to vote. When Wyoming became a state in 1890, the state constitution gave women the right to vote.
Utah became a state in 1896. It had been settled decades earlier, but statehood was delayed because the state was largely populated by Mormons, whose religious beliefs seemed strange to the rest of the country, especially their belief in polygamy, the right of a man to marry several women. During this time, the US government sent a Governor to be the chief executive of the Utah Territory. Eventually the Mormons officially outlawed polygamy and Congress voted Utah into the union as the 45th state.
Hawaii was one of the only U.S. states to be indpendently run before the U.S. took over. It was named The Kingdom of Hawaii from 1810 to 1893. Under the current president, William McKinley, wished to annex Hawaii mainly for military purposes. He signed a treaty of annexation with representatives from Hawaii, and in June 1897, Hawaii formally became a part of the U.S. Although it was part of the U.S. Hawaii was privately governed as a territory and not a state. Thus it remained for almost 60 years, until it's people wanted to be considered as U.S. citizens because they were not receiving the same freedoms, such as the right to vote. The citizens appealed for statehood, and in 1959 Congress passed the Hawaii Admission Act under the leadership of Eisenhower, and Hawaii officially became the 50th state of the U.S.
The Soviet Union, the United States, and the worldwide Jewish community were the chief supporters of the right to establish a Jewish State and led the vote to establish Israel. The Arab States and Britain were chiefly opposed to establishment of a Jewish State. After 1953, Britain became a strong ally of Israel and the Soviet Union became one of Israel's chief antaognists.
