You have to keep the times in mind the media had hyped the average man on the street into a sort of fearful frenzy. The arms lobby had an enormous amount of sway It took some time for the groundswell of protest from the younger people that were being conscripted and killed in this type of war to start to have effect, the people that did the voting in those days were used to the sort of thinking that applied during and before WW2, They were even more woefully informed then the early baby boomers, there is no comparing what effect the concentration of media ownership, and social conditioning had then as compared to now. Today they have to be far more careful about this sort of thing, however as you can see from the action taken in Iraq and Afghanistan misinformation can still be utilised to make a lot of money for the arms lobby and the corrupt.
