Cytosol which is composed of about 90% water and may be in the form of a solution or gel. Solution is non viscous state while gel is in viscous state. Peripheral parts of cells are often like a gel. Cytosol is a solution containing all the fundamental bio molecules of life.
Syrup are chemical mixtures that has taste, liquid in form but some syrups are hard to flow or viscous.....
Cholesterol found between the phospholipids can keep the membrane from becoming too viscous during freezing conditions.
SDS is a soap like content, that reacts with saline to become more viscous. I suppose your E.coli is in Fysiological salt solution, with or without peptone added.
