The flood is virus that was developed by the Covenant in Halo : Combat Evolved. The Covenant originally decided it was extremely dangerous and locked it inside one of the Halo's. The virus feeds on all types of living organisms in the Galaxy, turning planets into deserts. The Halo that the flood was in, was located on the center of a ring of smaller Halo's, about 1 light year apart from each other. These smaller Halo's could be activated if the flood ever escaped. But for all of them to detonate, the first one had to successfully explode first. But Master Chief destroyed it in Halo 1 before it successfully exploded. This saved the galaxy, but it also let the flood escape. the flood is not a virus but a parasite and was not developed by the covenant nor did they decide to lock it away. little is known about the origins of the flood they evolve verly quickly but can only infect senient life forms. before the halo rings fired the foruners locked some dormant specimens away for tests so these survived but locked away in a hi security vualt on the halo rings. in halo combat evolved the covenant mistaked the translation of the place and thought the place was a forrunner weapons cache howwver when they opened the vualt they found the flood and acdientally woke them,they escaped the covenat tryed to escape but wer to late the evuntually left the rings and startede to infect everything. to the question,in halo 2 the covenant city height charity was infected the master chief went to earth to stop the covenant later in halo the flood return with height charity ,holding an army of flood the master chief activates the rings and destroys the flood once and for all.
