In any navy the field of Hull Mechanical involves repairing any part of the ship except the electronics and the propulsion system. If you hit a big rock and tear a hole in the bottom of the ship, the hull mechanical rates are the ones who will fix it. (A Navy officer once told me every navy ship in the world has at least one hole in the bottom, but if you just pump out the water faster than it comes in it won't hurt you.) The International Institute for Strategic Studies claims Nigeria has 30 ships in its navy, of which 11 aren't seaworthy. The ships which get the most use are 25-foot-long Defender patrol boats, which are good for things like doing customs inspections of cargo ships. Defenders are neat little boats that most seafaring nations have some of, but the problem with them is they're so nimble people like to drive them into places with lots of undersea obstacles...so they get lots of holes in the bottom, and they're not big enough to put a really serious pump on--meaning once you get a hole in the bottom you need to get back to port and have someone fix it, right away. I would say the field of hull mechanical in the Nigerian Navy involves a LOT of underwater arc welding, and since the Nigerian Navy doesn't have very many sailors in it they probably also repair the machinery on the ship like the engines and hydraulic systems. It looks like a really good field if you want a job you can take into the civilian world.
