I am sure that would be possible but if you are getting divorced it is better if you can reach an amicable settlement.....solicitors and courts will eat up all your money.

Why would you file for divorce jointly?

If there is no disagreement between the husband and wife you can file jointly. It would save money and time to do that. Added: Technically, there has to be a plaintiff and a defendant in all law suits. Many divorces are uncontested, however, one party or the other must be the party to actually file the divorce. In uncontested matters, this can be done pretty quickly by one party filing the paperwork, allowing the other party to sign a waiver of service, then agreeing to the terms of divorce, signing it and having one party prove the divorce up in court (I don't think all states require a court appearance for an agreed divorce, however Texas does).

If your wife refuses to sign divorce papers is the divorce automatic after a certain amount of time?

If the other partner is missing like in a war or something like to where they cant be tracked down. * No. However, in some US states a divorce decree will be granted by "publication" if the requesting party can prove that all possible attempts have been made to contact the non petitioning spouse. In other states the requesting party must file a petition for divorce under the state's default laws.
